Many years ago I started a blog. Then an Etsy shop, and finally a website and Shopify store. If you guessed the name was Abandoned Rhinestones, then you're right. So why is a website for nursing career services called Abandoned Rhinestones? Well, the website MistyHamilton.com is already taken. I own AbandonedRhinestones.com, with a few others, and the email. Why spend money when I have a perfectly good website, domain, email etc already paid until February 2024? So, could the website domain name change next year? Probably not, I've had Abandoned Rhinestones since 2015, not planning on giving it up.
Hello, I’m Misty Hamilton, a registered nurse with healthcare experience spanning the last 20 years. I obtained my Master’s of Science in Nursing from Western Governors University and have worked on every rung of the healthcare ladder.
In 2003, I took my first position in the medical field as a phlebotomist. My supervisor was a paramedic and that prompted me to attend EMT school. In 2004 I started working on an ambulance in a very busy 911-system. I was lucky to have amazing coworkers, supervisors, and experiences to build my medical foundation. During that time, I completed pre-reqs for nursing school. In 2007 I attended Hill College LVN program, and completed the following year. I gained my RN in 2014, BSN in 2017, and MSN in 2021.
I’ve been lucky to work in many settings and specialties. As an LVN I worked med/surg, corrections, LTAC, ICU, and physician’s office. When I became a RN, my first position was as a charge nurse in a LTAC that I worked in as an LVN. My next move was mid-mgt in LTAC, which started my journey into management and led to me getting my MSN in Nursing Leadership and Management. But don’t let that fool you, I’m not one of those managers.
I chose to go into management to make a change and not be one of “those managers”. I’ve had some terrible managers over the years and they made an impression. They showed me how not to be a manager. They showed me that the status quo of management was not what was needed. Luckily, I had some amazing managers over the years also. I was able to take the good examples from them and use the bad examples from others to mold my management style.
If you want to see change you have to be the change. In my 8 years of management I’ve been able to create some amazing changes. The hard part is always the higher ups. There is a fine line you must walk to achieve what senior leadership want and create a culture that employees deserve.
Now I spend my time and career helping others in those situations. As a nurse career coach, I help nurses update or create a memorable resume, tips for their job search, and how to deal with those difficult situations that inevitably happen.
Outside of nursing and healthcare I have a few important titles. Wife, mom, daughter. I’ve been married for 12 years and we have an awesome little boy. I’m also a dog mom to a random dog I found in the toll lane driving home from work. She’s turned out to be a 100+ lb Cane Corso. My own little mini horse.
I’d love to hear from others that have decided to be part of the change. Let’s work together to make the change we want to see. Send me a message to share your experiences.
Misty
